ALL VOLUNTEERS SHOULD REGISTER online to become part of the database.  If you search for opportunities but don’t find something that fits your interests, skills or time availability, please call the East Central Iowa Volunteer Reception Center for additional help in connecting to an opportunity.  If you do not register online, you must print and complete the Liability Release form (and Parent Consent form, if applicable) and bring it to the agency you are placed with.

Volunteers should dress appropriately for the nature of the work and be prepared for unpredictable weather.  You should plan to bring your lunch and a water bottle, unless told otherwise. If you are coming to assist with mucking out homes and businesses, please bring tools if you have them.  Agencies are limited in the number of tools they have available.

You must have a current Tetanus shot before volunteering.

Americorps Vista

The flood relief will receive a huge boost in volunteer assistance due to the recruitment of up to 100 AmeriCorps Volunteer In Service To America (VISTA) summer associate and 15 yearlong AmeriCorps VISTA positions to assist various flood-recovery agencies and programs in Linn County.

The volunteers will be managed by Community Corrections Improvement Association, which currently oversees Central Cedar Rapids Weed & Seed AmeriCorps VISTA members. CCIA this weekend will partner with CorridorRecovery.org to define work for the AmeriCorps VISTA members that will be most beneficial to flood relief, including staffing of the Volunteer Reception Center and working on cleanup crews.

Summer associates will receive a living allowance ($833/month) and a educational award for college tuition or loans ($1,000 for eight weeks, $875 for seven weeks). The seven- to eight-week commitment must be completed by September 12. Yearlong members receive a monthly living allowance, an educational award of $4,724, and other benefits.

VISTA members may collect both unemployment insurance benefits and the living allowance.

An additional 100 summer associates and 15 yearlong members are being recruited for the Iowa City area. For more information email cr.vista@iowa.gov or visit http://www.vistacorridorrecovery.org/.
