CR Open House: Community Facilities + Parks & Recreation

Give your feedbackMore than 300 City facilities were damaged in the flood, including many large customer service buildings such as the Veterans Memorial Building, main library, public works building, central fire station and the animal control facility. During this series of open houses, residents will be able to examine several options for rebuilding public facilities:

  1. Return to existing buildings as they were at the time of the flood
  2. Return to existing buildings with both sustainability and functional upgrades
  3. Consider new buildings, alternative locations, and the possibility of co-locating various community partner operations together
  4. Reoccupy another existing building (added as a result of participant feedback)

Based on feedback from this public participation process, you are invited to provide feedback on ten potential facility programs and concepts:

  1. City Services Center/Veteran’s Memorial Building
  2. City Operations Center/Public Works Facilities
  3. Fleet Maintenance
  4. Animal Care and Control
  5. Central Fire Station
  6. Main Public Library
  7. Intermodal Transportation Facility
  8. Community Safety Center
  9. Neighborhood Centers
  10. Former United States Courthouse

Cedar Rapids Public Library

FEMA has informed the City and the Library that the Main building is greater than 50% damaged. This means that it is more cost-effective to build a new library than to repair the existing structure. The federal government will pay 90% of the costs of a like/kind building and 10% will come from the state. Improvements in the form, function or design would be borne locally. The library has received a targeted appropriation of $5 million in the state I-JOBS program. A request has been submitted to FEMA for relocation of the Main Library.

After much deliberation and brainstorming, the Trustees of the Cedar Rapids Public Library have created a document of "Guiding Principles" which will help guide them in the future planning for the main library. The Trustees hope that communication with our patrons at these open houses will validate and expand the planning for the future of the Library. Results of the Love My Library survey will also be shared.
